From Alan Lomax’s Hebridean odyssey in the summer of 1951 comes this selection of songs habitually used by women to accompany daily or seasonal toil: the tending of cattle, the carding and spinning of wool, the shrinking of tweed through the communal task of waulking.

This 'cycle of Gaelic songs' features five generation of singers from Martyn's family:  his  great-great grandfather, Peter Stewart (recorded c. 1910), his grandmother Peigi Stewart (mid-1950s) and his mother Margaret Bennett (recorded in 1998).  Margaret sings while Martyn accompanies her, interpreting the songs handed down to them from previous generations.
